PROBLEM: polypharmacy is common in the geriatric community due to the need to treat various diseases that develop with age. Taking more medications than clinically appropriate carries risks ranging from moderate to severe, resulting in adverse effects such as falls, cognitive impairment, and harmful drug interactions. OBJECTIVE: to identify in the elderly the neurocognitive and neuropsychological consequences derived from polypharmacy and its impact on their own quality of life and the environment. METHOD: this research is cross-sectional and descriptive with an analytical approach, considering a bibliographical base and a sample of 25 older adults, 13 residing in Guatemala City and 12 in the city of San Francisco, California. RESULTS: the majority of adults over 65 years of age suffer various diseases typical of their age and lifestyle. Therefore, the greater the number of diseases, the greater the prescription of medicines. It was found that the greater the polypharmacy, the greater the chances of developing other diseases such as mild cognitive impairment, confusion, poor judgment, congestive heart failure, tremors, muscle atrophy, falls, bone density, incontinence, and mobility problems. CONCLUSION: the lack of controls on the prescription of medicines in the elderly and self-medication drag as a consequence that the interaction of medicines causes serious damage to their health.
