Abstract

PROBLEM: Research addresses the impact of external parasites on fish health and production, focusing on trichodianosis and its negative effect on fish locomotion and survival. In the context of fish production in Río Hondo, the lack of knowledge of the local population is identified as the root of the problem. OBJECTIVE: Characterize and evaluate the external parasites called trichodinas in fish productions of gray tilapia. METHOD: The research is not only focused on characterizing and evaluating external parasites, but also on providing alternative practices for their control and prevention. This involves promoting good aquaculture management practices and sound animal health management. RESULTS: These parasites not only stress the fish, but also open the door to secondary pathogens such as fungi and bacteria, exacerbating production problems. The economic loss derived from the constant deaths of fish significantly affects fish production, which makes it imperative to maintain high pond health. CONCLUSION: The value of this study lies in its ability to train and empower people involved in fish farming. By providing detailed information, solutions and practices, the research aims to eradicate external parasites, specifically in gray tilapia. By improving understanding and skills in the management and control of parasitic diseases, it is expected to achieve a significant reduction in economic losses and an increase in production efficiency.

Iván Daniel Alvarado Vargas, Universidad de San Carlos de Guatemala

Es Ingeniero Agrónomo egresado en el Centro Universitario de Zacapa, Técnico en Avicultura egresado de la Asociación Nacional de Avicultores. Realizó una estancia académica en el Laboratorio de Protozoologia Acuática de la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México. Actualmente se desempeña como profesor interino del Curso de Investigación de la carrera de Psicología. Además, es miembro investigador del Consorcio Regional de Investigación Agropecuaria.

Claudia Esmeralda Villela, Universidad de San Carlos de Guatemala

Es Doctora en educación, Investigadora de la Dirección General de Investigación DIGI-USAC, profesora en maestrías y doctorados en la Universidad de San Carlos de Guatemala, es miembro en la Red Latinoamericana de Investigadores de Colombia CIID.
