Abstract

PROBLEM: major geriatric syndromes are currently considered a major challenge for active aging with independent living. OBJECTIVE: to identify cognitive and functional deterioration as major geriatric syndromes from physiotherapeutic neurorehabilitation in older adults in the department of Zacapa. METHOD: the study is retrospective cross-sectional. The prevalence of cognitive and functional impairment as major geriatric syndromes from physiotherapeutic neurorehabilitation in adults from 60 years onwards was determined. RESULTS: obtaining 40% of the older adults (N=33) presented moderately severe cognitive impairment according to the evaluation of the Reisberg Scale. Of the total population, 54% (N=45) manifested severe dependence, according to the Barthel Index, and in the comorbidities of patients with cognitive and functional impairment, vascular dementia prevails in 57% (N=47). CONCLUSION: the relationship between cognitive and functional impairment with comorbidities in patients between the ages of 60 and 90 years is demonstrated, which is useful in predicting the possibility of cognitive and functional impairment in older adults residing in the department of Zacapa.
