Abstract

OBJECTIVE: to demonstrate that bilingualism in early childhood, in the Mayan Kaqchikel community, favors the cognitive processes that will determine a good professional development for individuals. METHOD: a mixed descriptive-explanatory study was carried out with a universe of sixty-eight fathers-mothers-caregivers of children from zero to six years old, potential preschool students of the Cantón. Las Limas Bilingual School in San Pedro Sacatepéquez, Guatemala. RESULTS: 56% of the parents surveyed use 50% communication in the Kaqchikel Mayan language with their children, over a 15% percentage of parents who communicate with their children entirely in the Kaqchikel language. CONCLUSION: This is how it is concluded that if early childhood children live in a Kaqchikel-Spanish bilingual context, in addition to developing neurophysiological components and gradual neurocognitive processes through their development, they will strengthen their own cultural identity.
